Department of History
About Department
Welcome to the Department of History! The Department of History is as old as the institution itself. During the period of the last Nizam of Hyderabad, Meer Osman Ali Khan in 1923, the “Osmania Intermediate College” was established in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The pursuit of the study of History as a subject commenced with the establishment of this institution itself, while the medium of instruction was Urdu in the early days. In those days, History and Political Science were combined as one department, and Dr.S.A. Bari headed the combined department. The subject History was separated from Political science in 1966 and a separate ‘Department of History’ was conceived this year.
The great history scholar Dr.Harihar S.Thosar was the first head of the department, who wrote a book named ‘Historical Geography of Maharashtra and Goa’. After Dr.H.S.Thosar, Prof.K.L.Mahaley became the head of the department, who authored the book ‘Shivaji-The Pragmatist’.
At present, Our undergraduate program aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the historical events, movements, and contexts that have shaped the world. We aim to foster critical thinking by developing analytical skills to assess historical sources and narratives. Students will gain cultural awareness by exploring diverse societies through various historical lenses. The curriculum emphasizes research skills, teaching methods of historical research, including archival work and digital resources, while enhancing effective communication through essays, presentations, and discussions. The program includes core courses that cover ancient, medieval, and modern history, alongside a wide range of electives focused on specific regions, themes, and periods such as women's history, history, and environmental history. Students will also engage in a capstone project, allowing them to conduct independent research on a topic of their choice. Our faculty consists of experienced historians dedicated to teaching and mentoring, offering students invaluable guidance and inspiration.
